"excerpt": "Capt. Boyd, positively asserts, that previous to his sailing, accounts were received at the custom house of Liverpool, of 17 sail of French vessels, men of war and transports, having a number of troops on board, destined for a DESCENT ON IRELAND, being through stress of weather, blown into Bantry Bay, most of them dismasted; some of the people went on shore, were made prisoners, and went to Dublin; from the situation of the place the whole must inevitably be captured. They intended to have effected a landing at Londonderry in the North of Ireland. [NOTE. Capt. Boyd failed from Liverpool on the 29th December, and the French fleet left Brest, on the 26th of the same month: How then is it possible they should have reached Ireland in 3 days, and the accounts from thence received at Liverpool? Can it be thought that 20,000 French troops, and 17 ships of the line, have surrendered to the inhabitants of Bantry, whose population does not exceed 10,000 souls? It is more natural to think the French have taken that town.—Why were those 20,000 French sent to Dublin, 154 miles from Bantry Bay, and not to Cork, that lies but 9 miles from it? Can it be presumed, that the French fleet, in order to effect a landing at Londonderry, had entered the channel of Ireland so full of dangers, instead of sailing westward, on the main; a route much shorter and less difficult, free from the dangers of the channel, and which would not have exposed them to discovery from Liverpool or Dublin, and meet with every obstacle, that could have frustrated their design. "excerpt": "Of the intelligence brought by the late arrivals, the most important relates to the French expedition against Ireland. We have collected under this head, every interesting detail we have been able to meet with. By comparing the various accounts, it appears, that the French force when it failed from Brest, consisted of about 50 sail, including transports, of which 17 were of the line, and had on board 25,000 men.—They failed in three divisions, under the command of De Galles, Bouvet and Neuilly; the land troops under the command of general Hoche. They had scarcely left the port when bad weather dispersed them. Chief part of the fleet however rendezvoused at Bantry Bay, but the frigate la Fraternite, on board of which were the commanders of the fleet and land forces, not joining the fleet, after some delay left the Bay, without molestation, except by the wind, and by the best and latest accounts, reached Brest, in divisions without material loss. The expedition appears to have been planned on a large scale. The Toulon fleet which came round to l'Orient, and the armament at Dunkirk were probably to co-operate. Notwithstanding the above failure, the French appear still to have an expedition to Ireland in contemplation.",
